Ola peeps!
Here’s another review from me! And this
time it’s the famous book Red Queen by the amazing Victoria Aveyard!
I won’t deny that one of the things that
got me into buying this book is its hype. This book dominated a lot of social
media bookish communities when it was first released. And after reading it, I
kind of know why. Though there are stuffs in the book that I didn’t like.
I don’t know whether to start on the things
I like or the things I don’t like in this book. I don’t even know if there are
more things that I like than the things I don’t like. And please don’t hate me
by the end of this review. Hehe.
I think the only thing I like about this
book is when times Mare uses her power. I like how she started as a character. And
I like how she fights, like literally fight, using her powers to control
lightning. The kind of ability that’s never been heard of by both Red and
Silver. She’s unique but because she just discovered about her ability, she’s
still trying to control it. Still, she’s good at it. She looks so badass when
there are sparks coming out of her fingers.
And I feel like the only person I trust in
this book is Mare herself. This book is like a whole betrayal kind of book. Like
it always say, Anyone can betray anyone.
And I totally agree! It’s like Mare is the only one who won’t betray the
readers.
The biggest betrayal of the book though is
like… but honestly? I kind of see it coming. I don’t know why. I’ve always been
cautious about good boys in a story. Whenever I read a book, I always watch out
those too good because they are the ones who tend to betray you by the end of
the story. And when that certain character betray Mare, I wasn’t really really
surprise. Though I admit that when I’m having my suspicion on that person, I’m
hoping that my suspicion isn’t true. I’m really hoping so you know what I did? I
read the last page and I kind of regret it cause then I spoil myself from the
twist plus it confirmed my suspicion.
I was then thinking if I should continue
reading or just end it there cause I already know the twist and I already know
the end so what’s the use, right? But then I read it until the end and when the
twist finally revealed, I was just having my poker face and didn’t react much. What
I react though is the part where it’s almost at the end. Around the last
chapter before the epilogue and the epilogue itself. My.
And seriously, I got surprised on the
revelation in the epilogue. I thought the only shocking part of the story is
the betrayal of a character so I kind of feel bad because then I won’t be
surprised at all because I already knew. But then when I read the epilogue, I was
like What?!
And then I got excited and can’t stop
grinning. Now I’m dying to read the second book. Though I think I’ll wait for
the last book so I could buy a boxed set of it. Man!
All in all this is a great read. The story
of an unfair government and the rise of a rebellion is the story’s focus and it
gave enough focus to it. It stayed on track and it didn’t stall.
The way it was narrated was easy to catch
on too. But I admit it didn’t really pick up until the part where Mare’s powers
got revealed.
I don’t think this book still need
recommending. Everyone has read this by now. But for those who haven’t yet, do
read this. It’s a good one for a debut book.

I’m a writer repped by Suzie Townsend at New Leaf Literary & Media, Inc. I split my time between my hometown East Longmeadow, Massachusetts and Los Angeles. After graduating with a BFA in Screenwriting from the University of Southern California, I decided to try my hand at writing a novel. My debut RED QUEEN came out of the terrifying, unemployed year after college. The sequel GLASS SWORD released in February 2016.
Currently I’m working on the third book in the RED QUEEN series, along with pursuing other projects in literature and film. My proudest achievements are riding a horse in the mountains of Montana and navigating from London to Edinburgh without GPS.
